In developing the Advanced Image Coding codec, I found the following books very useful:

• H.264 and MPEG-4 video compression: Video coding for Next-generation MultiMedia, by Iain E.G. Richardson. Explains the details of the H.264 and MPEG-4 standards.
• The Data Compression Book, second edition, by Mark Nelson and Jean-Loup Gailly. The best book around on general purpose compression algorithms.
• Compressed Image File Formats, by John Miano. Explains the compression algorithms used in JPEG, PNG, GIF, XBM and BMP files.
